So what is a Guac-off? It is a glorious competition between Guacamoles in search of the best. The idea for the guac-off came about when another social worker heard that my guacamole was the best and she felt that hers was the best. Her argument was that she learned from Mexican women who taught her this skill so that she could get a husband--fair argument I suppose.
Well, last night was the guac-off (even though avacados are not quite in season) and there were 6 competitors. Also, so you know, social workers don't joke around about guacamole competitions. We had a master of ceremonies who was the only person who would know who each guacamole belonged to. Each guacamole was transfered to a paper bowl with a number on it and then placed around the room for people to taste. Then each person was given one ballot to be placed in the ballot box once they'd voted. And, being students who have to abide by a code of ethics, we had rules which were framed. The rules basically amounted to...
1. You may not advocate for your guacamole or identify which is yours
2. You may only vote once and must vote by 9:45pm
3. Any breaking of these rules will result in a disqualification
In the end of the competition there was an upset. Neither Sarah (the co-originator of the guac-off) or I won...another couple won, which was heartbreaking to both Sarah and I, but it allowed us to put the trash talking aside and make peace (which is appropriate since we're in a peacemaking class together).
However, I will say, I still preferred my guacamole to everyone elses...the rest were a little too citrusy/lemony for me. I think mine was a little creamier than normal...I may have put more lime in than usual. Ah well, we can't win them all, but I'm still a champion in my mind :)
